DEATH IS
ANOTHER DAY

April Death

Chill loneliness
Of rain-soaked twilight broods
Above wet roofs,
And hushes Spring across the lawn
Around deserted school next door.
So quiet there
Where empty windows stare
Unseeing at the budding trees
And wait for Sunday's sunrise.

. . . . .

And quiet here
Where now a candle
Pushes darkness to the edge of life,
And Aves' fragrance softly drifts to fading orchid.
Dim sidewalks of concern lie now deserted,
Uncurtained windows almost dark;
Budding Spring is hushed
In lonely twilight,
Washed in rain
And quiet peace
For Sunday.

DEATH'S RECKONING

Take today,
But not tomorrow
And the gold that lies, perhaps,
Over the gray horizon.

Take today,
But not yesterday
And the blotted pages tucked
Behind the misty shades.

Take today,
Dampened clay,
On which I am quietly
Marking my name.

Deaths nods the bargain for today.

But I draw back bestowing hands to find
My jealous hoard is plundered too.....
