A FRIEND ALONGSIDE

Big Sur

The world can be a lonely place.
Sometimes I want to hide,
Except that God has given me
This gift, a friend alongside.

We don't talk much about it,
For words add nothing more.
But my friend and I are closer
Than the sea is to the shore.

When one of us is happy,
The other cheers to the sky.
When one of us is in distress,
The other helps to cry.

When times are calm it may appear
We've drifted some apart.
But like the undercurrents,
My friend's deep in my heart.

It only takes a ripple,
No matter glad or sad,
And there we are like shore and sea
To share the good or bad.

I know I'll see my friend again
As sunrise comes each day.
Perhaps I take it for granted...
Will the sea and the shore always stay?

I'm thinking that it would be better
To speak what I know to be true,
To finish each day with a whisper,
"You're my friend; I'll stay beside you."

Cambria

A friend is someone
who knows you too well,
and loves you anyway.

Cambria

True friendship, like love, is good for eternity.

Cambria

Of all the gifts from heaven
I've had through time and tide,
I know the ones I treasure most
Are my friends here alongside.
